How Josh and I met + engagement story

Sunday, May 6, 2018
Hi, everyone! If you missed it, I got engaged! On April 26, 2018 to be exact. And it was the greatest most amazing moment of the last several years of my life, and I'm so so happy I get to be with this kid for the rest of my life (okay, he's not a kid - he's twenty six haha). So I of course had to take some time to write out a blog post all about him! And how we met, how we got engaged, etc. If you know me, you know that we moved very quickly in this relationship and some people say we're taking things too quickly! It's pretty laughable, honestly, like... let me be happy, people! I'm not hurting anyone by being happy, and I hope people truly understand that.

And that's an important thing to know, that I'm happy. You guys, I'm really happy. For the first time in a long time, I don't remember what my life is like being in a massive depression spiral. I don't remember what it's like to sob so hard, my throat is raw and my eyes are out of tears. I don't remember what it's like to constantly want to look perfect for someone else. I don't remember what it's like to be sad. I don't remember what my life is like being constantly anxious. And I know there will come days where I am in a massive depression spiral. I know there will come days where I can't get out of bed because life is so heavy and unable for me to bear. I know there will come days where I'll have an anxiety attack so major, I can't breathe.

But for now: I'm happy. Click through the read more to read about aaall the mushy love stuff!

I definitely think that this would work better if this was in more of a Q&A format, so I have most of the popular questions written down!

Who is Josh?
My fiancé. He's cute. He's twenty six.

How did you meet?
Funny story! There's a long version and a short version. We actually knew (of) each other several years ago! Back when I was in high school, I was friends with this girl named Emma, whom I had numerous mutual friends with. Josh is her older brother, and sometimes he would be at their house at the same time I was there, if he happened to be home on weekends or holiday breaks (he went to college a short distance away in Seattle). So we would see each other once in awhile, but I think one time he had his girlfriend over or he would immerse himself in whatever he was doing, so we never really saw each other and if we did, I'm not sure we spoke more than twenty words to each other. I ended up graduating high school and he graduated college and I literally never once thought of him because I saw him so rarely, but I remember I was home sometime in 2014 before everything went to hell, and we saw each other and waved. So we never spoke, but it was like... I remember him, you know?

SO fast forward a million years to 2018, and I'm sitting with my friend at a cafe in Washington DC, minding my own business. I see this person walking to where we are and I ignored it at first, but then I looked up and I honestly didn't immediately recognize him, oops. It took me a couple seconds and then I remembered him. So that was cool! We caught up a little bit and I was able to meet his dog! Who is adorable and who is also named Kitchen. Amazing, right? Even though I went back to New York soon after, we never really stopped hanging out! He came up to Manhattan to see me, and I went down to DC to see him. And then I went to London, and he pretended he was busy but then he came out to London! And that's where we got engaged. It was so rad!

TL;DR we met at a cafe even though we knew each other years ago.

How did he ask you to marry him?
He sort of sent me on a scavenger hunt all throughout London that day, it was actually very clever. Most of the things that he wrote were related to Taylor Swift lyrics or something else that I really like, so he incorporated some of the things I enjoy and am passionate about. The last thing I read was basically telling me to go home, so I went back home, and the first person that I saw was my mom! Looking back, it was so awesome that he got my mom to come all the way over to London, like that's really impressive in my opinion. So she and I had a really sweet reunion and it was nice to see her after a little while. I love my mom! We chatted a little bit, and then Josh popped up, I hugged him because my mom told me that he flew her out, and then he got down on one knee and proposed! And I said yes. Because of course.

Now what?
I'm writing this in and out of a U Haul and I found free wifi to post this because we're in the middle of a cross country road trip back home to the Seattle area! We started in Washington DC and we're ending in Washington State, and I think that that's extremely fitting. We've been to so many places and seen so many things, and I've been able to see so much of the US! My favorite place I've been so far is Nauvoo, Illinois, hands down, and honestly the entire Midwest because even though there's hardly anything there, it was amazing to learn more about church history. We passed through Adam-ondi Ahman and Far West, and it was awesome to learn and see the sites where things happened! I'll make a follow up post about this road trip and share my favorite things! But right now, we're going home.

When's the wedding?
June 15! It's the day after my mom's birthday, fun fact.

What's after the wedding?
Probably start that house hunt! We've actually narrowed down a specific area that we want to look at houses at, and I'm excited about that. We thought about the Portland, Oregon area, and we still like that area a lot, but we found an area that we love! Cross your fingers!

When are you going to have kids?
Yikes, not anytime soon! I don't want kids right now and he doesn't either. But we do know that when that time does happen, we're going to adopt. I hate the fact that there are kids who need good homes don't have them. I would never have a baby come out of my body knowing that there are perfectly healthy kids out there. <- Tell me how you really feel, I know. Haha I'm just really passionate about adoption.

Are you still going to law school like you wanted? What are your work plans?
No more law school for me! Which is fine, I don't really mind not going to school anymore, especially because I'm done with college and so is he. I'm currently a photographer (not one of those photographers from Utah who thinks they are because they take a good picture of a flower once haha) and an online English teacher (the latter of which is how I make money right now) and since I've been a photographer and teacher for years now, I'm going to keep doing that. The Seattle area is always crawling with people who want pictures taken, so it'll be easy for me. Josh can also more than likely find easy money. He's out of a job right now, but he has some connections. We both aren't concerned about it.

How's wedding planning going?
It's going great! Most people I know have planned their weddings in chunks, like they'll focus on certain parts and then move on to the next part (it's hard to explain, but I hope one person understands my garbage brain), but we aren't doing that. We have a piece of lined paper that we cross sections off when we've done that. And that's it. We don't have a print out of things we're checking off, we don't have a planner, we have none of that. It's worked great for us, and that's what matters at the end of the day. If looking a little unorganized keeps us organized, then that's what we're going to do. NO, I don't have a dress picked out yet haha.

And I think that might be about it? Those are the most popular questions I've gotten, so if you have a question or comment, feel free to email or DM me! I love talking Josh, being engaged, road trips, and weddings!
